Caring For Handmade Ceramics

My ceramics are food safe and can safely go in the microwave and dishwasher.

These activities will not damage the ceramic unless it hits something. If a piece has luster (the shiny gold or silver) it should not go in the microwave. Using a dishwasher will accelerate the erosion of the luster.

Thermal shock is a danger to all ceramic items.

Handmade ceramics are more vulnerable. When a pot experiences a fast temperature change it can crack. It is best to slowly bring your pot to the temperature of what you are using it for. If you are making tea, let the water cool down and stop boiling before pouring it into your mug. Do not pour boiling water into your mug. A spoon in the mug can help absorb some of the heat from the water.
